Most fantasy novels, if you get rid of all the magic and magical creatures, you are left with Medieval Europe the clothing, the social order (knights, lords, kings, and serfs), the castles, the weapons, and everything else is based on this one time period. There are very few fantasy worlds that are not based on Medieval Europe.
